Why does saving weight help?

In a Greenpower race we try to go the furthest we can with the energy we're given - 4 batteries worth. To go furthest we need to waste as little of that energy as possible. When a car moves forwards it wastes energy in two main ways:

• Overcoming friction of the air passing over it (aerodynamic drag)
• Overcoming the rolling resistance of the wheels and tyres.

Rolling resistance depends on the weight of the vehicle - a lighter car has a lower rolling resistance and so wastes less energy. That's why your car uses more fuel when it is fully loaded, compared to when it is empty. Less wasted energy means more energy left to go forwards with - and that means a greater distance in the race.

Less weight = lower rolling resistance = more distance.
